Cement related biologic complications in the cement-retained implant-supported fixed restorations

Abstract

|
|
Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis can be induced by prosthetic complications. The major factors related to prosthesis-related biologic complications are the cement and strain around crestal bone areas. The cement remnants in the subgingival area act like foreign bodies and provoke an inflammatory reaction around periimplant tissue. Therefore some kinds of techniques should be considered to reduce the cement remnants. In addition, the cement wash-out of a fixed partial prosthesis is considered as a risk factor of biologic complications. The plaque accumulated in the space between an abutment and a restoration may be plugged in the subgingival area during function. This may act as an infection source. In the mechanical point of view, the jiggling movement of a restoration after decementation may increase the strain around the crestal bone area. In conclusion, proper techniques must be applied to minimize the cement remnants. The proper selection and combination of cements for retention must be considered to prevent decemenation at weak units of fixed partial prostheses.
